Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Background
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is widely acknowledged to be one of the most highly performing NHS Foundation Trusts, as demonstrated by both a double excellent rating from the Healthcare Commission and the financial and governance ratings we receive from Monitor. The Trust is one of the busiest in the country, with 9,000 staff and two hospitals in central London serving the 750,000 patients who have contact with our services each year. Our two hospital sites cover nearly 335,000 square metres and include structures built from the mid 1700’s to 2006.

Energy Awareness Campaign

In March 2007 the Trust launched an energy awareness campaign, setting tough targets with the aim of achieving the following goals:

  1. Increase environmental awareness amongst staff, patients and visitors and encourage everyone to play their part in helping to save energy
  2. Reduce our carbon emissions by 3,000 tonnes by 2010
  3. Reduce costs
  4. Create a better and safer working environment

The campaign, composed of marketing materials, publicity, and direct action to engage staff, has had a very successful first year. The key elements are outlined below:

Marketing Materials and Publicity

  1. Monthly posters encouraging staff and visitors to conserve energy.
  2. Booklet containing energy facts and figures issued to all staff.
  3. Holiday themed poster contest held in conjunction with students from the Evelina Children’s Hospital school.
  4. Campaign information and contests featured in the Trust magazine, People.
  5. Dedicated energy webpage on the Trust intranet, updated monthly.
  6. Dedicated email address created for staff to submit energy savings suggestions and ideas.
  7. Roadshows at both hospital sites providing energy savings information and giveaways to staff, patients and visitors.
  8. Press releases.

Staff Engagement

  1. Recruitment of Local Energy Representatives - Over 60 staff have been trained as Local Energy Reps (LERs) to take responsibility for identifying savings and encouraging good energy practice within their departments. To date nearly 500 savings ideas have been generated, many of which have been implemented at the Trust.
  2. Training packages are currently being developed to include energy awareness training on both the staff induction day and as part of mandatory training.

Results to Date
The results achieved after one year are impressive and we are on course to exceed our targets. Gas consumption is now down by 14.64%, equal to 2,484 tonnes of CO2 and electricity consumption is down by 5.64%, equal to 1,804 tonnes of CO2.

In addition to increasing energy awareness and achieving considerable savings in carbon emissions, the campaign has established the Trust as a sustainability leader within the healthcare sector. We have been approached by other Trusts to share information and best practice, and were the first public sector organisation to join the Green500 – the top 500 organisations in London who are reducing their carbon footprints. We hold regular meetings with the Mayor of London’s Climate Change and Sustainable Transport team as well as Transport for London’s ‘imovelondon’ division to share initiative updates and ideas.

The Trust is also in the midst of a £10 million programme to install a Combined Heat and Power Plant at both sites. When the new systems are fully operational in March 2009 carbon emissions will be reduced by a further 7,300 tonnes CO2.
