In March 2007 the Trust launched an energy awareness campaign, setting tough targets with the aim of achieving the following goals:
- Increase environmental awareness amongst staff, patients and visitors and encourage everyone to play their part in helping to save energy
- Reduce our carbon emissions by 3,000 tonnes by 2010
- Reduce costs
- Create a better and safer working environment
The campaign, composed of marketing materials, publicity, and direct action to engage staff, has had a very successful first year. The key elements are outlined below:
Marketing Materials and Publicity
- Monthly posters encouraging staff and visitors to conserve energy.
- Booklet containing energy facts and figures issued to all staff.
- Holiday themed poster contest held in conjunction with students from the Evelina Children’s Hospital school.
- Campaign information and contests featured in the Trust magazine, People.
- Dedicated energy webpage on the Trust intranet, updated monthly.
- Dedicated email address created for staff to submit energy savings suggestions and ideas.
- Roadshows at both hospital sites providing energy savings information and giveaways to staff, patients and visitors.
- Press releases.
Staff Engagement
- Recruitment of Local Energy Representatives - Over 60 staff have been trained as Local Energy Reps (LERs) to take responsibility for identifying savings and encouraging good energy practice within their departments. To date nearly 500 savings ideas have been generated, many of which have been implemented at the Trust.
- Training packages are currently being developed to include energy awareness training on both the staff induction day and as part of mandatory training.
